Versatile, Durable, And Timeless: Oliver Charles Is Slow Fashion At Its Finest
Introducing the 2nd blog in my 3-part blog series exploring how Oliver Charles sweaters perfectly represent the different elements of slow fashion.
This blog is about the rise of fashion hauls and why my new All-Season Boat Neck is a piece that directly challenges these wasteful trends.
This blog goes beyond the 7 Day Challenge, and dives into the versatility and timelessness of these sweaters. I explain why these characteristics make them the perfect answer for a fast fashion-focused world.
----------
Fast fashion introduced a culture of excess, where mass-produced clothes are bought in bulk, flaunted online for likes and views, worn briefly (or not at all), and discarded without a second thought.
This "haul culture," perpetuated by influencers and viral social media trends, encourages an unfettered model of overconsumption and subsequent environmental toll.
In contrast, slow fashion prioritizes sustainability, longevity, and quality.
Oliver Charles sweaters embody these principles down to every meticulous stitch. Made from yak wool, pieces like my All-Season Boat Neck are durable, versatile, and fully compostable, ensuring that their end-of-life is just as environmentally positive as their production.
Through my experiences wearing Oliver Charles sweaters, I’ve seen firsthand how they challenge wasteful fashion trends and offer a more thoughtful alternative to disposable fashion.

What Are Fashion Hauls?
Fashion hauls are online shopping sprees made visible. They are massive clothing purchases showcased in social media videos. Typically, influencers present their latest hauls by trying on or simply unwrapping dozens of items at once, often with no intention of keeping them long-term. This content fuels a consumerist mindset that prioritizes quantity over quality and contributes significantly to textile waste.
With the rise of fast fashion giants, platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram have become flooded with haul videos, encouraging impulse buying.
Currently, the #fashionhaul tag on TikTok boasts a whopping 153,000 videos, not including all those tagged using slightly different terminology.
The rapid turnover of trends this encourages means that clothing is treated as disposable, with many of these haul items being worn just once before ending up in landfills.

Haul Culture Is Killing The Planet
Fast fashion and haul culture contribute significantly to global waste. Each year, 92 million tons of clothing end up in landfills or incinerators, releasing greenhouse gases and toxic chemicals. 11.3 million of that is attributed to America alone.
Many of these garments are made from synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon, which shed microplastics into waterways and take hundreds of years to break down.
The constant cycle of production and disposal leads to massive resource depletion, with the fashion industry consuming an estimated 93 billion cubic meters of water annually—enough to meet the needs of five million people.
The environmental toll is big! From excessive water use in textile production to pollution caused by synthetic fibers, the industry’s impact is widespread. Dyeing processes release toxic chemicals into rivers, affecting aquatic ecosystems and contaminating drinking water supplies.
Meanwhile, fast fashion textile factories often operate under lax environmental regulations, and create a lot of air and water pollution.
The carbon footprint of fast fashion is immense, with the industry accounting for approximately 10% of global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.
By participating in haul culture, consumers unknowingly fuel this destructive system, accelerating climate change and ecological degradation.

Sustainable Materials Are The Answer
In a culture where clothing is treated as disposable, forever fashion focuses on garments that stand the test of time.
These are pieces designed with durability, functionality, and timeless style in mind. They are made to be worn, repaired, and eventually returned to nature rather than discarded when a fast fashion giant releases their next trending collection two days after the last one.
While we should always prioritize continuing to wear what we already own and seek secondhand sources for “new” things when needed, if the need for something truly new does arise, choosing brands like Oliver Charles who stand by their creations and intentionally design them to be worn year after year is one way to support forever fashion.
Their sweaters, made from 100% natural wool fibers or their awesome seaweed material called SeaCell, are not only built to last but also fully compostable. Meaning, they can return to the earth without leaving behind harmful waste.
Opting for high-quality, long-lasting clothing over impulsive fast fashion purchases is a small yet impactful step toward reducing textile waste and preserving the planet for future generations.
One of the standout features of Oliver Charles sweaters is their remarkable versatility. During my two 7 Day Challenges, one in the winter and one in the spring and summer, I wore my OC sweater in various settings, from casual outings to work meetings, from chilly mornings to warm afternoons.
The temperature-regulating wool kept me comfortable in all conditions, and the minimalist design made it easy to dress up or down.

Don’t Forget About Durability!
Durability is at the heart of slow fashion, and Oliver Charles sweaters are built to last. The meticulous craftsmanship ensures these pieces withstand daily wear without pilling or losing shape.
Oliver Charles also provides clear care instructions, reinforcing their commitment to make garments that truly last.
My experience has shown that with proper care, these sweaters maintain their quality for years, making them a worthy investment in slow fashion.
But brands making durable products is only the first step. Consumers also play a crucial role in making forever fashion become a reality.
A well-made garment will last a very long time with proper care and maintenance.
Wool is a naturally resilient fiber, but using the right washing techniques will help preserve its softness, shape, and longevity. It’s better to hand wash your sweater in cold water using a mild, wool-specific detergent.
If hand washing isn’t an option, use a washing machine’s gentle or wool cycle with cool water to prevent fiber damage and shrinkage.
Avoid harsh detergents or fabric softeners, as these can strip the natural oils from the wool, reducing its durability over time.
After washing, resist the temptation to wring out excess water, as this can stretch the fibers. Instead, gently press out moisture with a towel before laying the sweater flat to air dry.
Hanging it while wet can cause the fabric to stretch out of shape. To further maintain its integrity, always store your sweater folded rather than hanging, as prolonged hanging can lead to stretching, especially in the shoulders.
By following these simple care steps, you’ll ensure your Oliver Charles sweater remains a staple in your wardrobe for years to come.

Choosing Forever Fashion Over Haul Culture
Haul culture has normalized disposable fashion, but forever fashion is the antidote. By choosing high-quality, versatile pieces like the All-Season Boat Neck, we reject the cycle of waste and embrace sustainability.
Caring for our clothing, buying less, and supporting brands that prioritize slow fashion are essential in shifting the industry toward a more sustainable future.
With Oliver Charles, we’re not just wearing a sweater, we’re making a statement that fashion should be thoughtful, durable, and, beneficial to the planet.
If you believe that every good wardrobe starts with owning less and owning better, consider buying yourself an OLIVER CHARLES sweater.
